You won't find the best show about selling on CNBC, Bloomberg or by watching "The Apprentice." You will find it on the Discovery Channel, namely "The Deadliest Catch," How could a show about catching crab apply to sales and management? Take a field trip on a crab boat and you will find out.
As the above clip shows, some teams make it big, some go bust, some find tragedy as they search for "Red Gold." All the teams rely on their captain to get them there. Just watch and you will see:
- How strong leaders drive their team to achieve more than they thought possible.
- How one bad attitude can bring down an entire team.
- Relentless, dogged determination to make numbers.
- The challenges of finding good people and getting rid of the bad.
You will also find:
- The boat is the sales organization.
- The captain's job is to devise and implement a strategy to get his team "on the crab" -- which isn't much different than devising a strategy to find prospects.
- It's the crews job to get the crab--reel in the prospects no matter what.
- They have a quota -- sound familiar?
- The captain has to make decisive decisions an get the crew to buy in.
- The crew has to be in sync with the captain to achieve success.
- They have to deal with obstacles they could never plan for such as rogue waves and personal tragedy. How many sales situations have you been in where you had to deal with an obstacle you never expected?
